Safety Update

Dear friends,

Many of you have seen or heard about the increased violence in Ecuador, especially in Guayaquil, over the last year. Last week, violence rose to a new level.

On Monday, January 8th, the government declared a state of emergency after a gang leader escaped from prison. On Tuesday, January 9th, there was a televised assault on a Guayaquil television station.

Because of this, Starfish scholars have been sent home, and all of Starfish’s programming is being delivered virtually, in line with the directives from the Ministry of Education. Everyone is OK for now, and our team will reassess the situation to determine if and when we will return to in-person programming.
