A Letter from One of Our Scholars
Dear friend,
My name is Alicia, and I’m writing to you today as a proud Starfish scholar. I’d like to share a bit about my journey at Starfish over the last seven years and express why your support means so much to students like me.
In 2017, when I was in the sixth grade, my mom signed me up for Starfish. She saw it as a chance for me to learn new things, especially since she never had the opportunity to finish school herself. Little did I know, Starfish would become a second home, a place where I could grow and discover my potential.
Every year brings new and exciting tutoring sessions, activities, and projects that keep me motivated to learn more. One of the programs I’m really proud to participate in is the community leadership program. This year, my classmates and I are working on a project to offer a safe space for kids aged 5 to 8 in our neighborhood. With the insecurity right now in our country, we wanted to give kids a chance to just be kids and make friends in their neighborhood. It’s something our community really needs, and I’m excited to be a part of making it happen.
Over the years, I’ve experienced so many positive changes because of Starfish. I’ve made friends, stepped out of my comfort zone, found my voice, and embraced all the new things Starfish has to offer. Before Starfish, I was pretty shy and not very social. Now, I’m one of the first to welcome new students and make friends. I’ve also become more organized and responsible with my school work, and I really enjoy learning. For example, in school, we never read books. But now, thanks to Starfish, I’ve read five books as part of our tutoring classes, and even more books on my own from the Starfish library.
Now that I’m a senior, my next big step is college. Starfish is helping me prepare for the admissions process, and I hope to start studying accounting or business administration next year. Starfish has been a huge help to me and my community, and I genuinely wish more people could experience the positive impact it has had on my life.
