Update from Ecuador and Celebrating Our 10th Birthday!

Update from Ecuador

Our students in Guayaquil, Ecuador, have recently completed their first semester of the 2021-2022 academic year, and we have surveyed them about their educational experiences so far.

Over 60% of our students now receive daily online classes at their schools, which is an improvement from last year! This metric demonstrates that some schools have been able to adapt to remote teaching. However, 30% of our students still have no online classes at all. These students are left on their own to solve weekly tasks with only a few links to video tutorials to guide them.

94% of our students responded that Starfish tutoring sessions were neither too easy nor too difficult for them, and that the topics and skills from these sessions align with Ecuador’s national curriculum, which, in turn, helps them succeed in school.

We are also pleased to report that the attendance rate at Starfish tutoring for the entire first semester was 96%, and the average grade was 8 out of 10.

Celebrating Our 10th Birthday

From Saturday, October 30, 2021 to Tuesday, November 9, 2021, we will have a series of virtual events planned to celebrate Starfish’s 10th birthday and raise funds to continue supporting our scholars! There will be something for everyone! Events will include a trivia tournament, an Ecuadorian cooking class, hearing from our staff and scholars, a bilingual concert, a silent auction, a virtual 5K race, and more! All of these events will have a focus on our scholars and the Ecuadorian culture. More information can be found on our event page. We hope to see you there!
